RÉNO-DÉPÔT tips and tricks
Planting trees and shrubs
Planting trees and shrubs requires special care and attention if you want to see good results. Here are a few important tricks to help you get it just right.
Where to plant

  • It’s better to plant small trees and shrubs at least 1 metre away from your foundation. Give larger specimens a safe distance of 10 or 15 metres from the house.
  • Plant big trees far from power lines or any other obstacle that could impede its development.

When to plant

  • Trees and shrubs in pots or in soil containers: These can be planted anytime during the season up to September, unless the soil breaks up. If that’s the case, refer to the method used for planting shrubs with exposed roots.
  • Shrubs with exposed roots: Must be planted early in the spring or in the fall during the dormancy period.

Planting

  • Dig a hole 2 or 3 times larger than the diameter of your pot or soil container. Line the bottom of the hole with about 15 cm of soil; soil line must be flush with the ground.
  • For potted plants, unpot the soil container of roots and drop them into the hole. For those wrapped in burlap, cut the strings and free the top part only. The burlap will rot in the ground.
  • Fill the hole with soil.

Watering and mulch

  • Once the hole is filled, add soil to the surface to form an irrigation basin 10 cm deep and the same diameter as the hole.
  • For the first 2 or 3 weeks, water generously once or twice a week by filling the basin, especially when the weather is very hot.
  • Cover the surface with a 5 to 10 cm layer of peat, Cedar bark or western bark to prevent weeds from growing and to help keep the soil moist.

Staking

  • Stabilize leafy trees with a solid metal stake planted into the ground on the windiest side to prevent the tree from rubbing against the stake. Attach the stake to the tree 2/3 of the way up using the protective piece sold for this purpose.
  • Remove the stake two years after planting the tree or as soon as the protective piece becomes too tight for the trunk.
